Your Saturn return is the stretch of time when Saturn, moving through the zodiac, comes back to the degree it occupied when you were born. It happens about every 29.5 years: the first around age 29, the second around 58, the third around 88. Enter your birth date and the calculator works out your natal Saturn from the astronomical ephemeris, every exact return date, how old you are at each one, and the whole period Saturn spends in your Saturn sign. No birth time is needed for the dates; add a time and place and it also shows the house your return falls in.

What a Saturn return is

Saturn is the slowest of the planets visible to the naked eye. It takes 29.46 years to circle the Sun, so from Earth it spends roughly two and a half years in each sign. At the moment you were born, Saturn stood at one particular degree of the zodiac: your natal Saturn. It keeps moving, and about 29 and a half years later it arrives back at that degree. That arrival is your Saturn return.

A return is rarely a single day. For about four and a half months every year Saturn appears to move backward (retrograde), slipping back six or seven degrees. If that loop happens near your natal degree, Saturn crosses it three times: once moving forward, once moving back, and once moving forward again. If the loop falls elsewhere, there is only one exact pass. When astrologers talk about someone being in their Saturn return, they usually mean the two to three and a half years Saturn spends in the natal Saturn's sign; some use only the months when it is within a degree or two.

Saturn was the Roman god of sowing, harvest and time, and the planet has long been linked with limits, structure and maturity. In ancient China it was called Zhenxing, the Settling Star, because it took about 28 years to go round the sky and seemed to settle in one of the 28 lunar mansions each year. Different traditions noticed the same thing: one lap of this planet is about the length of a chapter of life.

When is my Saturn return? Ages for the first, second and third

The first exact pass of your first Saturn return falls between about 28 and a half and 30. Whether it is a few months earlier or later depends on where Saturn was in its orbit when you were born and on when its retrograde loops fall. The second return comes between 58 and 59, and the third between 87 and 89. The calculator lists all three and marks which are behind you, which is under way and which is still ahead.

In astrological writing the first return is the classic coming-of-age: the rules and expectations you borrowed in your twenties get tested, and you keep the ones that turn out to be yours. The second is often linked with the second half of a career and with changes of role, asking which responsibilities you still want to carry and which you can put down. The third is usually read as a time of looking back and passing things on. These are symbolic readings; your own timing will not match them neatly, and it doesn't need to.

It is no coincidence that the late twenties carry so much weight in the term's popularity. Many cultures treat the approach of thirty as a threshold, and Confucius placed standing on one's own feet at thirty. Astrology ties that threshold to a planetary cycle, which gives people a shared language for talking about it.

How this Saturn return calculator works

First it computes your natal Saturn's longitude with the same ephemeris used for our full birth charts (astronomy-engine, checked against the Swiss Ephemeris). Then, from two and a half years before to two and a half years after each expected return, it steps through Saturn's position one day at a time, finds every moment its longitude equals your natal Saturn's, and narrows each one down to the minute by bisection.

The two windows are defined like this. Within 1° runs from the day transiting Saturn first comes within one degree of your natal Saturn to the day it last leaves that range. Saturn in your sign runs from the day Saturn first enters your natal Saturn's sign to the day it finally leaves, including any retrograde dip back out and in again. Ages are counted on the calendar: how many full years and months old you are on the day of each exact pass.

If you leave the birth time blank, we use noon. Saturn moves only a few arcminutes a day, so the time hardly changes the dates; it matters only for the house. Dates are given in the local time of your birthplace, or in UTC if you leave the place out.

How to read your Saturn return

Start with your Saturn sign. It describes how you meet responsibility, rules and long-term goals. Saturn in a fire sign is often read as learning to take ownership of your drive; in an earth sign, building practical structures that last; in an air sign, working out commitments, fairness and boundaries with people; in a water sign, finding emotional boundaries and a sense of safety.

Then look at the house. Because transiting Saturn returns to its own natal position, all three returns fall in the same house, and that house's area of life is often where things get rearranged during those years: the 2nd house is money and self-worth, the 4th home and roots, the 7th partners and close collaborators, the 10th career and public role.

You can also look back along the cycle. Saturn completes a quarter of its orbit roughly every seven years: a first square around age 7, the opposition around 14 or 15, a second square around 21 or 22, then the return at about 29 and a half. Remembering what you were dealing with at those ages often shows a single thread running through. A Saturn return isn't a test you pass or fail; it is closer to taking stock of which structures are worth building on and which no longer fit.

A Saturn return is not a curse

Online, Saturn returns are often told as horror stories: breakups, lost jobs, everything going wrong. The idea is everywhere, but there is no evidence behind it, and we don't describe it that way. In the same Saturn return one person changes careers, another gets married, and a third simply becomes clearer about what they want while nothing outward happens at all.

In astrology Saturn rules time, structure and maturity, and its pressure works more like a demanding teacher than bad luck: things don't get worse, they just get harder to gloss over. Treating the period as a good time to make considered decisions and lay foundations is more useful than bracing for misfortune. Real decisions still rest on your actual circumstances and your own judgment.

FAQ

What age is your Saturn return?

Your first Saturn return falls between about 28 and a half and 30, the second between 58 and 59, and the third between 87 and 89, because Saturn takes about 29.5 years to go round the zodiac. The exact dates differ from person to person depending on where Saturn was when you were born and when its retrograde loops fall; enter your birth date to get them to the day.

Why does my Saturn return have three dates?

Saturn is retrograde for about four and a half months every year. When that loop falls on your natal Saturn's degree, Saturn crosses it moving forward, crosses it again moving backward, and crosses a third time moving forward. If the loop falls elsewhere, there is only one exact date. The months between the three passes are usually read as the most concentrated part of the return.

Is a Saturn return bad luck?

No. The belief that something terrible happens during your Saturn return is widespread but has nothing behind it. Astrology reads it as a period of taking stock and settling: arrangements that no longer fit become easier to notice, and the directions worth keeping become clearer. It describes what you may be thinking about, not what will happen to you.

Should I avoid marrying or changing jobs during my Saturn return?

There is no such rule in astrology. Plenty of people make long-term decisions during their Saturn return, such as marrying, moving or starting a business, partly because it is a time when commitments feel serious. Whether and when to do something depends on your real circumstances and your own judgment, not on where a planet is.

Can I calculate my Saturn return without a birth time?

Yes. Saturn moves only a few arcminutes a day, so a birth time that is off by hours barely changes the return dates; without one the calculator uses noon. Only the house needs an accurate birth time and place. Add them, and the result also tells you which house of your chart the return falls in.

How long does a Saturn return last?

It depends on the definition. The exact passes are single days. The period when Saturn is within one degree of your natal Saturn lasts from a couple of weeks to most of a year, depending on whether a retrograde loop falls there. The period Saturn spends in your Saturn sign, which is what most people mean, lasts about two to three and a half years. The calculator shows all three for each return.
