Your Venus sign is the zodiac sign Venus was passing through when you were born. Astrologers read it for how you love and what you value: the people you're drawn to, the way you show affection, and what feels beautiful or worth your money. Enter your birth date and city to find it. A birth time only matters on the few days when Venus changed signs.

What your Venus sign describes

Venus is the planet astrologers connect with love, pleasure and value. Your Venus sign describes what draws you to a person, a song or a place, and how you show that you care. Picture two friends at the same flea market. One heads straight for the crate of old records, the other for a stack of linen napkins. Neither is wrong. Venus describes that pull.

In relationships, Venus speaks to how you flirt, what makes you feel appreciated, and the kind of affection you give without being asked. One person shows love with a long, focused conversation, another with a hot meal, another with a surprise weekend away. Venus describes attraction and appreciation; the drive to go after what you want belongs more to Mars.

Venus isn't only romantic. It also shows up in friendships, in what you happily spend money on, in the way you make up after a disagreement and in what looks beautiful to you. If you've ever walked into a room and felt instantly at ease, or instantly wrong, that reaction has a lot of Venus in it.

Why your Venus sign is close to your Sun sign

Venus orbits the Sun inside Earth's orbit, so from where we stand it never appears more than about 47 degrees from the Sun. Each zodiac sign is 30 degrees wide. Put those together and your Venus sign can only be your Sun sign or one of the two signs on either side of it, five possibilities in all. A Leo can have Venus in Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo or Libra, but never in Capricorn.

Venus in your own Sun sign or the sign next door is the most common result. Venus two signs away happens only when Venus was near its widest swing from the Sun, so it turns up less often. If a website ever tells you a Taurus has Venus in Scorpio, something has gone wrong with the calculation.

There's a nice bit of sky lore here too. If your Venus is in a sign before your Sun sign, Venus was rising ahead of the Sun as the morning star around the time you were born. If it's in a later sign, it was trailing the Sun as the evening star. Some astrologers read a morning-star Venus as quicker to act on attraction and an evening-star Venus as more reflective. Treat that as a nuance, not a rule.

How fast Venus moves, and when you need a birth time

Venus usually spends about three to five weeks in each sign and takes roughly a year to go round the zodiac. About every 19 months it turns retrograde, appearing to drift backward for around six weeks as it passes between Earth and the Sun. Around those stretches it can linger in one sign for about four months, so people born a whole season apart can share a Venus sign.

Because Venus moves slowly next to the Moon, your birth date settles your Venus sign almost every time. A birth time only matters if Venus crossed from one sign into the next on your birthday. The calculator checks the whole day, midnight to midnight in your birth city's local time. If Venus stayed put, you get one answer. If it changed signs, you'll see both, and your birth time decides between them.

The city matters even without a time, because midnight in Sydney and midnight in Chicago are many hours apart. Time zones and historical daylight saving rules are applied for you, so enter your time exactly as it was recorded. Your Venus house is a different matter: it depends on the Ascendant, which needs an accurate birth time and place.

Venus sign, Sun sign and Mars sign

Your Sun sign describes your core drive and sense of purpose. Your Venus sign describes what you enjoy and how you relate. A Capricorn Sun with Venus in Pisces might run a tight budget meeting in the morning and tear up at a street musician on the way home. Both are real. The Sun is the direction; Venus is what makes the trip feel worth taking.

Mars is Venus's natural partner in a chart. Venus describes what attracts you; Mars describes how you pursue it. Someone with Venus in Taurus and Mars in Aries may long for slow, steady romance and still be the first to ask for a number. Reading the two together gives a much fuller picture of how someone loves than either one alone.

Common misunderstandings about Venus

“Venus only matters for women.” Everyone has Venus in their chart, and love, taste and pleasure aren't gendered. Older books sometimes read a man's Venus as the kind of partner he wants rather than part of who he is. Most astrologers today read Venus as part of everyone's own personality.

“Your Venus sign tells you who to date.” It describes what tends to draw you in and how you show affection. It doesn't produce a list of approved Sun signs. Compatibility comes from two whole charts and, far more, from two real people.

“Venus in detriment or fall means bad luck in love.” Those are traditional terms for how easily Venus's gentler style works in a sign. Venus in Aries, Virgo or Scorpio loves just as much. It simply loves in a less conventional key.

FAQ

What's my Venus sign if I don't know my birth time?

In most cases your birth date and city are enough. Venus stays in a sign for weeks, so on the large majority of days it sits in the same sign from midnight to midnight. If it changed signs on your birthday, the calculator shows both options. Even knowing whether you were born in the morning or the evening is often enough to choose.

Why is my Venus sign different from my Sun sign?

Because Venus and the Sun move separately. Venus can be up to about 47 degrees from the Sun, so it often sits in a neighboring sign. Having Venus in a different sign isn't unusual and doesn't mean anything is off. It simply means your way of loving has a different flavor from your core personality.

Can Venus be in any sign in my chart?

No. Your Venus sign is your Sun sign or one of the two signs on either side of it, so there are only five possibilities. A Scorpio, for example, can have Venus in Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius or Capricorn, but never in Aries or Taurus.

Does my Venus sign show who I'm attracted to?

It shows the qualities that tend to catch your attention and the way you like to be loved, rather than a type of person or a Sun sign. Venus in Gemini may fall for a quick mind; Venus in Capricorn may be won over by reliability. Your Mars, Moon and Descendant add more, and real attraction often surprises any chart.

Why do different sites give me different Venus signs?

Usually your birthday fell on a day when Venus changed signs and the other site assumed a time, often noon, or skipped the time zone. Simple date tables can also slip near a sign change. This calculator works from an astronomical ephemeris and tells you when your birth day was split between two signs.
